On Monday, March 31, 2025, energy infrastructure firm and Bitcoin mining giant Hut 8 announced the launch of a new Bitcoin mining venture, American Bitcoin. American Bitcoin was born from a merger between Hut 8 and American Data Centers, a company owned by Eric and Donald Trump Jr. As part of the deal, Hut 8 transferred about 61,000 of its mining rigs to American data centers, which were then rebranded to American Bitcoin.
In return, Hut 8 received over 80% ownership stake in the company. Further, the symbiotic deal will allow the Trump brothers to earn a 20% stake in the new Bitcoin mining venture. Eric Trump, who co-founded the American Bitcoin venture and will serve as its chief strategy officer, is convinced that the strategic partnership is a step in the right direction to make the US a key player in the Bitcoin mining industry.
His brother Donald Trump Jr. also believes there are better economic advantages to mining than just buying and holding BTC. Meanwhile, according to Hut 8 CEO Asher Genoot, the launch of American Bitcoin is an opportunity for the firm to create a standalone entity for its mining operations, enabling it to focus on its other goals.
Ever since Donald Trump’s campaign for US president, the Trump family has vocalized their interest in the digital assets space, and this recent merger has further solidified their place in the burgeoning industry.
